Technology Business Incubator of Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai (Southern Region)
Prince of Songkla University (PSU) is a leading national university situated in Southern Thailand. TIPs will be located at PSU's main campus in Hat-Yai, at the ground floor of the Faculty of Environmental Management, near the Research and Development Office. The premises are undergoing renovation. The operation start of TIPs is planned for middle of 2006. PSU also has the prospect of establishing a Southern Science Park. If this is approved, TIPs will be the pioneer project for the Southern Science Park and re-locate there at a later stage.

...biggest challenge?
To meet the high expectations from InWEnt, NSTDA, the university, … Expectations are high from everywhere. It’s a complete new activity, out of the box. Very promising, we want to keep on going. We are a show case, but this can also be a danger case. You have to plan very carefully how to approach the stakeholders and the beneficiaries, otherwise you might send the wrong message about the role of the incubator.
...most beneficial in the project approach?
Face-to-face trainings, the supervision and the feed-back were very beneficial, also the group work and the partnerships among the TBI teams. The approach is also helpful for other kinds of projects. The university realised the hidden potential: the university should be a role model. This is changing the system of teaching: now with entrepreneurship training; researcher ends up with innovation and not just a publication. There were public outcries from people around on the role of the university to put more effort in the community and the region in putting more entrepreneurs in business and commercialising research, getting projects off the shelf. Now, people will be able to touch the benefit from the products and innovation that are brought about by new entrepreneurs. |
